From the Brookdale Stage to the American Idol Spotlight: Alum Julia Sienna Santiago Earns Golden Ticket

When Julia Sienna Santiago took the stage on American Idol, she didn’t just arrive as a contestant; she arrived as a performer shaped by community, discipline, and experience. And for Brookdale, she arrived as one of our own.

A 2025 graduate from Freehold with an associate degree in Psychology, Julia’s journey to Hollywood has roots right here on the Brookdale campus.

Long before stunning judges with her soulful rendition of Connie Talbot’s “I Would,” earning her a coveted Golden Ticket to Hollywood, Julia was captivating audiences in Brookdale’s Performing Arts Center. In Spring 2024, she appeared as Vivian Kensington in Brookdale’s production of Legally Blonde, demonstrating the same stage presence and emotional range that would later command national attention.

Her voice also filled another meaningful Brookdale moment, singing the Star-Spangled Banner at the 2024 Commencement Ceremony in Collins Arena, an experience that reflected both her artistry and her connection to the college community.

Today, Julia balances two worlds that might seem distinct but, for her, are deeply aligned: public service and performance. Now serving as a police officer in Sea Girt, she made a memorable entrance at her American Idol audition, in uniform, even playfully handcuffing judge Luke Bryan.

While the lighthearted introduction drew laughter, it was Julia’s confident delivery and powerful, polished vocals that ultimately commanded the room. Her performance earned unanimous approval from judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie, sending her on to Hollywood Week.

The moment also marked a proud reveal for her family. Julia, the youngest daughter of Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago and his wife Toni, had kept her audition a closely held secret due to show confidentiality agreements.

“We’ve been holding this in for so long,” her father shared, expressing pride in watching his daughter pursue her passion. The whole family is elated by Julia Sienna’s success.”Tears of joy were just befallen,” he said.

With viral TikTok performances garnering millions of views, including her rendition of “Lay Me Down,” which has over 5.5 million views, Julia’s voice has reached audiences far beyond the local stage. Her American Idol audition performance of “I Would” also caught the attention of the song’s original artist, Connie Talbot, who personally reached out to congratulate her and praised Julia’s interpretation.

Yet her story is not one of sudden discovery. From Howell High School’s Fine & Performing Arts Magnet Program, to Rockit Academy at the Count Basie Center and summer intensives at Paper Mill Playhouse, Julia has consistently refined her craft, including during her time at Brookdale, where she found both academic grounding and creative opportunity.

Her upcoming performance of Lauren Daigle’s “Rescue” during Hollywood Week, airing at 8 p.m. on Monday, March 2 (and streaming on Hulu), marks the next chapter in a journey defined by resilience, talent, and the power of pursuing multiple callings.

For Brookdale, Julia’s success is more than a headline; it’s a reminder of what happens when passion meets preparation.

From the Performing Arts Center to the national stage, Julia Sienna Santiago continues to shine, and we’ll be cheering her on every step of the way.

Update: Julia Sienna Santiago appeared in the Golden Room during the March 2 American Idol “Hollywood Week” episode, where contestants were narrowed from 127 singers to the Top 30. Although her performance of Lauren Daigle’s “Rescue” was not shown during the broadcast and she did not advance to the Top 30, Santiago shared her gratitude on social media, writing, “To say I am blessed is an absolute understatement.”
