It started like any other day at Brookdale Community College… until it didn’t.
When Brian Laguatan walked in looking for Lauren Siegel, Erin McCarron, who greeted him, thought it was going to be a simple visit, until it quickly became something much bigger. A proud Brookdale alum of the Nursing program, Brian arrived on campus with a plan and a ring. The assumption? Maybe he stopped by to say hello or take Lauren out for lunch. The reality? Something much bigger.
“I thought he was just coming by to surprise her,” Erin shared. “Then I saw the ring box and thought—oh wait… this is happening!”
And just like that, in a moment of complete surprise, Brian got down on one knee and proposed to Lauren right on campus, flowers in hand, nerves replaced by excitement, and a room full of stunned smiles.
Lauren Siegel, a mental health counselor at Brookdale, was completely caught off guard. “It was a total shock,” she said, still glowing. “I had no idea.”
The surprise couldn’t have been more meaningful. Both Brian and Lauren share deep roots at Brookdale. Brian began his journey in the College’s Nursing program, graduating in 2014, before continuing his education and advancing his career in healthcare, most recently completing his postgraduate psychiatric nurse practitioner studies in 2025. This quick surprise stop was on his way to work at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
Lauren also started at Brookdale, earning her associate degree before completing her Master of Social Work (MSW). Today, she gives back to the same community as a mental health crisis counselor, supporting students with compassion and care.
Their story, like many great ones, spans years. The two first met each other in their early twenties through a group of mutual friends, lost touch, and then reconnected, this time for good. Both were born on August 30 (something special they have in common), and after three years together, Brian knew exactly where he wanted to begin their next chapter.
“I really wanted it to be unexpected,” he shared. “We both graduated from here, so it just felt right.”
And right it was.
Now engaged and still soaking in the excitement, Lauren was seen walking around campus with a bouquet of roses and a smile that says it all.
From classmates to careers, and now to a lifetime together, their story is a reminder that Brookdale is more than a place to learn; it is a place where lives intersect, futures begin, and sometimes… love stories come full circle.
Congratulations to Brian and Lauren on their beautiful beginning.
