A Capitol Day for Brookdale

Brookdale Community College proudly marked a historic day at the New Jersey State Capitol as members of its leadership team participated in key events shaping the state’s legislative and executive agenda.

Led by Board Chair Barbara Horl and Vice Chair Tracey Abby-White, and joined by Trustees Dyese Davis and Steve Clayton, the delegation attended the New Jersey State Assembly Swearing-In Ceremony and election of the Speaker on Tuesday morning at the War Memorial. They were accompanied by the dedicated staff of the Office of Governmental Affairs & Community Relations (GACR): Yvette Krupa, Thomas Yacullo, and Jorge Tererros.

During the ceremony, 80 Assembly members took the oath of office, including 12 newly elected legislators bringing fresh perspectives to the Statehouse. The proceedings highlighted the importance of civic engagement and underscored Brookdale’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a strong presence in Trenton and cultivating relationships with state leaders.

In the afternoon, Chair Horl and GACR Executive Director Ed Johnson attended Governor Phil Murphy’s final State of the State Address in the Assembly Chambers at the NJ State House. The address was delivered before a distinguished audience that included former governors, members of the NJ Supreme Court, legislators from both houses, and state and local dignitaries, a true display of tradition, leadership, and pomp and circumstance.

Beyond attending these historic moments, Brookdale’s team engaged directly with legislators from across the state to advance outreach through the Office of Governmental Affairs & Community Relations. These conversations signaled the launch of Brookdale’s 2026 initiative to expand its presence and advocacy at the State House, reinforcing the College’s role as a proactive voice for higher education, workforce development, and community partnerships that benefit students and communities statewide.
